Setting The Stage

Studio CG commissioned a collection of eight graphic design pieces for a Western-music themed merchandise and poster series. The brief: skull illustrations that channel the energy of rock and the mythology of the American West, designed for screen printing, apparel, and large-format posters. Each piece in the collection tells its own story while belonging to a coherent visual universe of cowboys, guitars, and pure skull-rock energy.

Challenge We Faced.

Illustration-driven design for merchandise lives in a very specific tension: the work has to be visually arresting at poster scale and retain its punch when printed at two inches on a t-shirt tag. Every design had to read instantly, bold enough to be a statement, detailed enough to reward a closer look.

Our Approach & Process

  • Research & Strategy

Reference deep-dive into vintage Western concert posters (Fillmore era, 1960s–70s), Mexican Día de los Muertos graphic tradition, and contemporary streetwear illustration. Mood board curated with Studio CG across two rounds of direction-setting.

  • Design & Development

All eight pieces executed in Adobe Illustrator with vector-native construction for print scalability. Each design tested for screen-print feasibility at three, four, and five colour separations.

  • Branding Elements

Consistent typographic treatment using Western display typefaces across all eight designs. Unified colour palette: off-white, charcoal, burnt orange, and an accent rust-red used selectively across the collection.

  • User Experience Considerations

Print-ready files delivered at 300 DPI with bleed and crop marks. Apparel mockups provided for eight garment styles. Separate digital-use versions optimised for social media and web.
